Kern River Status Update

The Three Day Mean of Kern River flow continues to remain under 100 CFS. This continues to put July 2021 on track to be the driest July on record. There is a strong possibility that this summer will be the driest on record.

With River flow so low, Eastside Entitlement will soon drop to a level that does not allow for Utility deliveries, based on losses in the Canal. Due to these conditions, the Eastside Canal will likely shut down sometime next week once state allocations have been exhausted.

Due to these historically low River flows, instead of the previously issued Kern Island Canal proration, the District has instituted a waiting list. Surface water will be made available to District growers proportionately on a daily basis. District staff will continue to monitor the situation daily to best manage the water supplies we have.

To help visualize just how far the River has dropped, the District is providing this graph, showing River flow starting in April to today, compared to what the River did in 2013, 2014, and 2015.
