Kern River Status Update

Given current weather conditions and powerflow obligations water may be available in all systems except for the Eastside (due to construction activities). These conditions could last through the end of the month. As always, growers district wide are encouraged to reach out to the Dispatch Office to let us know of any potential demand. At the end of last year water applications for 2024 went out to all water users. All growers are required to review these applications to ensure the information we have on file is correct. A fillable form version of the cover page can be found on our website here (Simply complete, print, and include with your application). If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out to our Operations Department at (661) 834-4653 and speak to Antonio. We ask that growers complete the applications and submit them as soon as possible as the water applications are essential to ensuring appropriate prorations when applicable.Registration for the Water Association of Kern County’s 2024 Kern County Water Summit is open. The Water Summit will be held on March 7th at the Mechanics Bank Theatre from 6:30 AM to 2 PM. Tickets can be purchased at this link.

Your irrigation system works most effectively when it distributes the right amount of water uniformly. The North West Kern Resource Conservation District has Mobile Lab Technicians who can field test your irrigation system. With pressurized systems, trained Mobile Lab technicians will check the operation of your filters, and emitters or sprinklers. Pressures and flow rates are carefully measured throughout the field to determine how uniformly water is being applied to your crop at a low cost to the water user. See this flyer on our website for more information.

To help visualize the current state of the River, the District is providing this graph that compares flow rates for the two-year periods of 2022-2023, the current period of 2023-2024, as well as other two-year periods in which the second year follows a significantly above average for the Kern River. The flows for this year are estimates only and subject to revision.
