Kern River Status Update

The Kern Island, Eastside, Farmers, and Buena Vista canal systems are in operation in order to meet powerflow obligations. Any grower with demand should contact our Operations Department.

The Stine Canal will be shut down at Gosford road on March 17 and return to normal operation on April 14 in order to improve the canal section and install structures associated with the Old River recharge facility which is nearing completion.

The Water Association of Kern County is hosting the 2023 Kern County Water Summit at the Mechanics Bank Theatre on March 24 from 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM. It is a full day of discussion about California’s most critical water issues. The deadline to register is March 10 and there will be no ticket sales on the day of the event. More information can be found on this flyer and you can register online at www.wakc.com.

The most recent Bulletin B-120 forecast update by the Department of Water Resources predicts that the April through July runoff for the Kern River will be around 206% of normal. This forecast is based on observed conditions through February 21. The March 1 Bulletin B-120 is expected to to go out tomorrow.

In January water applications for 2023 went out to all water users. Growers are encouraged to review these applications to ensure the information we have on file is correct. A fillable form version of the cover page can be found on our website here (Simply complete, print, and include with your application). If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out to our Operations Department at (661) 834-4653 and speak to Cindy or email her at cynthia@kerndelta.org. We ask that growers complete the applications and submit them as soon as possible.

To help visualize the current state of the River, the District is providing this graph that compares flow rates for the two-year periods of 2021-2022, the current period of 2022-2023, as well as other two-year periods in which the second year was significantly above average for the Kern River. The flows for this year are estimates only and subject to revision.
