Kern Delta Water Supply Update

Given current weather conditions and powerflow obligations, water is available on the Kern Island and Buena Vista canal systems. These operations are expected to continue dependent upon District powerflow obligation. Growers are encouraged to inform Operations of any demand so the District can better manage resources.

The Board of Directors intends to appoint a new Division 6 Director at the February 17 Board Meeting. If you are interested in filling this position, you may submit a letter with your qualifications to the Board at the District Office, prior to February 13, 2026.

*** District Water User Alert ***

Invasive golden mussels are an issue impacting water resource facilities throughout California. District inspections have shown no evidence of the presence of golden mussels in Kern Delta Water District facilities to date. Please click on this link for more information regarding golden mussels.

Last month water applications for 2026 went out to all water users. All growers are required to review these applications to ensure the information we have on file is correct. A fillable form version of the cover page can be found on our website here (Simply complete, print, and include with your application). If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out to our Operations Department at (661) 834-4653 and speak to Antonio. All water users are required to submit an updated water application for 2026 or water orders may be interrupted. As such, we ask that growers complete the applications and submit them as soon as possible as the water applications are essential to ensuring appropriate prorations when applicable.

The District is aware that mail service can be a bit unpredictable these days.  To assist customers with ensuring their payments are received by the District on time, we encourage you to utilize alternative payment options including:
The new District Grower Portal or the Online Payment option, available in the top right corner of our website kerndelta.org. If you need assistance in utilizing either of these options, please don’t hesitate to contact the District at (661) 834-4656.

Water orders are now accepted via phone, text message, email, and grower portal. Text messages will only be monitored from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM and are only for orders for the following day, not for day of changes. Day of changes are required to go through the 24-hour Dispatch line (661) 834-4653. When texting orders, please include grower name, turnout, and flow rate.  A confirmation message will be provided back to the grower to confirm the order. The District Text Messaging line is (661) 485-4017. Water orders can also be placed via email at waterorder@kerndelta.org.

A supply of excess dirt following rehabilitation projects completed during the winter shut down is available from the District. Those interested in utilizing this dirt should contact the District Office at (661) 834-4656 and ask for Chris.

Your irrigation system works most effectively when it distributes the right amount of water uniformly. The North West Kern Resource Conservation District has Mobile Lab Technicians who can field test your irrigation system. With pressurized systems, trained Mobile Lab technicians will check the operation of your filters, and emitters or sprinklers. Pressures and flow rates are carefully measured throughout the field to determine how uniformly water is being applied to your crop at a low cost to the water user. See this flyer on our website for more information.

To help visualize the current state of the River, the District is providing this graph that compares flow rates for the twelve-month periods starting October 1 of 2024-2025, the current period of 2025-2026, as well as other recent water years. The flows for this year are estimates only and subject to revision.
