Kern River Status Update
This is the third week in a row where monsoonal moisture has helped to keep the Kern River Three Day Mean above 100 CFS. This most recent system that came through over the weekend was the strongest so far. Unfortunately, at this time there are no more systems in the immediate forecast.
District staff continues to monitor the River flow on a daily basis in case the River begins to drop again. Since the Eastside has used up their allotment of State Water, if the River drops so low that there is not enough Eastside Entitlement to cover the loses in the canal that system would have to shut down.
Last week the June 2021 River flow numbers were finalized. June 2021 is officially the driest June on record, beating out the previous record set in 2015.
Due to these historically low River flows, instead of the previously issued Kern Island Canal proration, the District has instituted a waiting list. Surface water will be made available to District growers proportionately on a daily basis. District staff will continue to monitor the situation daily to best manage the water supplies we have. |
